UC Davis vs. UC Santa Cruz Series Recap


Over the weekend, UC Davis swept UC Santa Cruz in their 3 game series.


Game 1


Aggies took the victory over UC Santa Cruz with a final score of 5-2.


Rebecca Ortiz led UC Davis with 2 hits, including a double in the third and a homerun in the fifth. The Aggies had a total of 8 hits, with singles from Alyssa Beckers, Marisa Quiros, Jenny Resnick, Sophia Pelletier, Maya Espinosa, and Tricia Leong. Davis had 2 stolen bases, one each by Alyssa Beckers and Marisa Quiros.


Tricia Leong pitched 6.2 innings, striking out 8 and only allowing 4 hits and 2 runs.



Game 2


After some back and forth, the Aggies pulled ahead in the fifth to take the win with a final score of 9-6.


UC Davis started off strong, Rachelle Cepeda leading off with a walk, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lila Simpson with Maddy Demos knocking her in with a single. After Demos advanced to second on a groundout by Melanie Callahan, Paulina Binsfeld singled to right field, sending Demos home, giving the Aggies an early 2 run lead. UC Davis had 14 hits, Demos leading the way with 3 hits, having 2 singles and 1 double. Binsfeld, Callahan, and Sophia Pelletier each had 1 single and 1 double, Lila Simpson had 2 singles, and Alli Poore, Cepeda, and Gabriela Fontanesi had 1 single each. Binsfeld and Callahan led the team in RBIs with 2 each.


Poore got the win in the circle for the Aggies, pitching 4 innings with 3 strikeouts and only allowing 5 hits and 2 runs.



Game 3


Although they allowed 3 runs in the 1st, the Aggies broke away in the 5th to defeat UC Santa Cruz with a final score of 13-3.


UC Davis began to pull away in the 3rd inning with a two run homer by Alli Poore and Marisa Quiros stealing home on a walk drawn by Rachelle Cepeda. Aggies broke away for good in the 5th, scoring 6 runs, with singles by Sophia Pelletier and Melanie Callahan and a double by Alyssa Beckers. Aggies had 12 hits total with Callahan and Quiros leading the way with 2 singles each, a single each for Paulina Binsfeld, Brittany Bangert, and Ashley Yount, and a double by Jenny Resnick and Lila Simpson. Davis had 11 RBIs, with 2 each from Beckers, Resnick, and Poore and 1 each from Simpson, Callahan, Maddy Demos, Pelletier, and Gabriela Fontanesi.


Poore got the wins for the Aggies, pitching 5.1 innings, striking out 2 and allowing 10 hits and 3 runs. Tricia Leong threw 1.2 innings relief with 1 strikeout, allowing only 1 hit and no runs.



Players of the Week


Pitcher of the Week: Pitcher of the week is Tricia Leong. Leong pitched 9.1 innings, only allowing 2 earned runs and 7 hits. She had 10 strikeouts and walked only 3.


Players of the Week: Rebecca Ortiz and Melanie Callahan. Rebecca Ortiz had 4 RBIs with a double, home run, and a sac fly. Rebecca also had an amazing defensive weekend, with no errors and several diving plays. Melanie Callahan had 4 hits and 3 RBIs and a stolen base.


Honorable mentions: Paulina Binsfeld and Maddy Demos who each had multiple hits and RBIs.

UC Davis stayed in the game until the end, but Oregon pulled away late with an 11-4 victory in the semi-final game of the NCSA Pacific Regionals. Despite out-hitting Oregon 13 to 12, the Aggies lost.
