UC Davis vs. UC Merced Series Recap


Over the weekend, UC Davis swept UC Merced in their 3 game series.


Game 1


Four RBIs by Alyssa Beckers on 2 hits drove the UC Davis Aggies to win their first game 10-3 against the UC Merced Bobcats.


Although Merced scored first with 1 run in the first inning and 2 in the second, Davis tied things up in the bottom of the second inning thanks to doubles by Tricia Leong, Alyssa Beckers, and Maya Espinosa. Davis then pulled away for good in the third inning with 1 run coming in on a hit by pitch for Beckers and a single by Brittany Bangert driving in 2 runs.


The Aggies brought the big bats, having 13 hits, including 4 doubles and 2 home runs with Melanie Callahan and Jenny Resnick each knocking out a solo home run, Callahan in the fourth and Resnick in the fifth. Beckers, Callahan, Rachelle Cepeda, Espinosa, and Leong each had 2 hits for Davis and Resnick, Bangert, and Alli Poore each had 1.


Leong got the win for the Aggies, pitching 3 innings, striking out 2, and only allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Poore came in from the bullpen, pitching 2 innings, striking out 1 and only allowing 1 hit.



Game 2


In the second game of the series, all 9 of the Aggie seniors took the field to celebrate their senior day in their last home games. The Aggies scored early to take the lead against the Bobcats, taking the victory with a final score of 7-1.


While the Bobcats scored 1 in the second, the Aggies took it back and scored more in the bottom of the second thanks to a single by Brittany Bangert and a groundout RBI by Lila Simpson, allowing them to take the lead for good.


Davis brought the big bats again, with 10 hits. Bangert, Ashley Yount, and Gabriela Fontanesi each collected 2 hits; Paulina Binsfeld, Melanie Callahan, Jenny Resnick, and Rachelle Cepeda had 1 hit each. Resnick led the big bats with a 2 run homer in the third.


Alli Poore got the win for Davis, pitching all 7 innings, allowing only 1 run on 5 hits. Poore struck out 3 and walked 0.



Game 3


In the third game of the series, Davis once again took an early lead to defeat Merced with a final score of 9-1.


Although Merced scored 1 in the first, the Aggies pulled ahead in the second thanks to an RBI double by Marisa Quiros, a walk by Alyssa Beckers, and a sac fly by Maddy Demos.


Davis managed 8 hits and 7 RBIs with Quiros leading the pack with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Beckers, Lila Simpson, Demos, Rebecca Ortiz, Alex Lee, and Maya Espinosa each collected 1 hit and Beckers also racked up 3 RBIs.


The Aggies committed no errors and turned 1 double play, with Demos making 6 plays.

Ashley Yount got the win for Davis, allowing 1 run off 5 hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 4. Alli Poore pitched 1/3 inning, striking out 1.



Players of the Week


Pitchers of the Week: The pitchers of the week are Alli Poore and Ashley Yount who each had a win and only gave up 1 earned run each in 16 combined innings.


Players of the Week: The players of the week are Alyssa Beckers and Brittany Bangert. Beckers went 3-4 with a double, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 7 RBIs. Bangert went 3-6 with a double and 3 RBIs.


Honorable Mentions: Rachelle Cepeda, Melanie Callahan, and Marisa Quiros. Cepeda went 3-4 with 4 walks, Callahan went 3-7 with 3 runs and 1 home run, and Quiros went 2-6 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.
